Course Information
Description Continuation of Commercial Music Sight Singing and Ear Training I with emphasis on chromatic tonalities and melodies. Learn to sight sing selected melodies in chromatic tonalities; and transcribe dictation of selected rhythmic patterns, chromatic melodies and intermediate chord progressions
Prerequisites MUSC 1213 and MUSC 1211

Week 1:
Syllabus and Review: (discussion on time signature, rhythm notation, triads, nature of dominant chords, harmonic intervals, ascending and descending melodic intervals, major scale, minor scales, chords as numbers, solfeg, etc.)

Week 2:
Rhythm: 8th and 16th note based study
Harmony: I-IV-V chord progressions (w/ inversion study)
Intervals: melodic ascending intervals (m2 - M6)
Melody: major scale study, minor scale study (natural, melodic, harmonic)

Week 3:
Rhythm: 8th and 16th note based study cont.
Harmony: diatonic chord progressions (1 - 7 in the key)
Intervals: melodic ascending intervals (m2 - P8)
Melody: singing major and minor melodies

Week 4:
Rhythm: triplets, dots and ties
Harmony: diatonic chord progressions (1 - 7 in the key) cont.
Intervals: melodic ascending intervals (m2 - P8) cont.
Melody: singing major and minor melodies cont.

Week 5:
Rhythm: comprehensive study
Harmony: diatonic chord progressions (1 - 7 in the key) cont.
Intervals: melodic ascending & descending intervals (m2 - P8)
Melody: singing scales: major, minor (natural, melodic, harmonic), major pentatonic, minor pentatonic, blues scale, whole tone scale, bebop scale, etc.

Week 6:
Rhythm: odd meters using previously studied rhythm concepts
Harmony: 6, 7, and 9 chords (major, minor, dominant)
Intervals: harmonic intervals (m2 - M6)
Melody: singing scales: major, minor (natural, melodic, harmonic), major pentatonic, minor pentatonic, blues scale, whole tone scale, bebop scale, etc. cont.

Midterm Review

Week 8:
Midterm - Thurs March 11

SPRING BREAK - NO CLASS March 15-19

Week 9:
Rhythm: swing beat/feel study
Harmony: borrowed chords (b7,b3, 4m, 5m, etc.)
Intervals: harmonic intervals (m2 - M6) cont.
Melody: singing melodies or songs based on previously studied scales

Week 10:
Rhythm: rhythm study of commercial styles
Harmony: secondary dominants and borrowed chords (b7,b3, 4m, 5m, etc.)
Intervals: harmonic intervals (m2 - P8)
Melody: singing melodies or songs based on previously studied scales cont.

Week 11:
Rhythm: rhythm study of commercial styles cont.
Harmony: 11 and 13 chords (major, minor, dominant)
Intervals: melodic and harmonic intervals (m2 - P8)
Melody: modes study and singing (lydian/dorian/mixolydian)

Week 12:
Rhythm: hemiola
Harmony: altered dominant chords / tensions and voice leading (b5, #5, b9, #9, #11)
Intervals: compound intervals - intervals greater than the octave (9th, 10th, 11th , 12th, 13th)
Melody: singing modes and melodies or songs based on modes (lydian/dorian/mixolydian)

Week 13:
Rhythm: hemiola cont.
Harmony: altered dominant chords / tensions and voice leading (b5, #5, b9, #9, #11) cont.
Intervals: compound intervals - intervals greater than the octave (9th, 10th, 11th , 12th, 13th) cont.
Melody: singing melodies and/or songs based on modes (lydian/dorian/mixolydian)

Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success.

You will receive one free absence before your absences start to count against your grade in the attendance category. After that, EACH UNEXCUSED ABSENCE DEDUCTS 10% OF YOUR ATTENDANCE GRADE. Three lates/early departures = one absence.

Students must contact instructor with reason for absence by email prior to absence in order to receive an excused absence. Excused absences must meet the following criteria: death in the family, medical related emergency, illness. Any cause beyond this will be left up to instructor discretion.
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
